About

This work was written in response to a call for scores by the Atlanta Contemporary Ensemble in the USA. Works were intended for a performance along the lines of Pictures at an Exhibition based on paintings by Atlanta artist Krista M. Jones, and written for small ensemble and modern dancers. Electric was a response to the painting of the same name. The title of the painting suggested bright sparking ideas, and the painting itself suggested movement and energy.

The scoring used most of the instruments on offer. There was a stipulation that the chosen instruments had to mix wind and strings. The work is highly rhythmic and features much bright high playing from the wind players - especially the alto saxophone which is at the top of its range much of the time. The drum kit provides a relentless drive throughout the work, only rarely pausing and becoming more reflective.

Commissioned note

Electric was one of the three winning works in the Atlanta Contemporary Ensemble’s 2019 call for scores
