This work follows a fairly traditional four-movement form. A lively first movement begins with a short slow introduction. This movement was originally written in 2016 as a piece for horn and string trio.
The brief slow second movement, is the only movement with a subtitle: 'Chorale'. The third movement is something like a scherzo, with a consistent use of 3+3+2 groupings of quavers. The final movement begins with a rhapsodic horn line set against irregular repeating string pizzicato patterns. The remainder of the final movement is energetic with much use made of short sharp string chords.
The work has no programmatic background.
